Winter has arrived, and we’re excited to share some ideas to help you create a cosy and inviting living space! Winter can feel gloomy and affect your mood, so it’s essential to embrace the season’s positives, like slowing down and creating beautiful, comfortable spaces to enjoy with loved ones, including yourself.

We have some decor ideas to help you create a warm living space for the winter season:

Cushions: Style and Comfort

Cushions are a fantastic starting point for decorating your living room. I love bringing out my winter cushions each year. When selecting your winter cushions, choose rich, tactile fabrics like velvet that feel comforting to touch. Don’t hesitate to mix and match different sizes, textures, and patterns to create a layered look. We want you to experience both tactile comfort and visual delight! Consider rich jewel tones, warm neutrals, and deep shades like burgundy or navy. Feel free to add something a bit artistic or graphic into the mix.

Throws: The Ultimate Winter Essential for a Cosy Living Room

No cosy winter setup is complete without a selection of throws; I like to think of them as the comfort food of cosy décor. These versatile accessories are perfect for snuggling up on the couch with a good book or movie. Choose throws made of materials that provide maximum warmth, such as wool knit or cashmere. Drape them over your sofa or favourite armchair for easy access and added decoration. Layering different textures and colours can enhance the cosy vibe and visually warm your living room. Once you’ve selected your cushions, choose a couple of complementary colours to create a cohesive colour palette that fits your living room decor.

Lighting: Creating a Cosy and Warm Ambience

Lighting plays a crucial role in setting the mood during winter and is essential for cosy living room ideas. Instead of relying solely on overhead lighting, incorporate multiple light sources to create a layered effect. Use floor or table lamps and string lights to add warmth and coziness. Soft, warm white bulbs can mimic the natural glow of a fireplace, making your living room feel even more inviting. True confession: I’m obsessed with warm ambient lighting, to the point where I even take lamps with me on holidays! Traveling fairy lights are always a must—just ask my family and friends.

Candles: Ambient Glow and Fragrance

Along with lamps, candles are essential for a cosy winter living room. Their soft, flickering light creates an atmosphere of warmth and relaxation enhancing the cosy atmosphere. Opt for candles in winter scents like cinnamon, vanilla, pine, or cedar to capture the essence of the season. Arrange candles of varying heights and sizes on coffee tables, mantels, or shelves for a visually appealing display. For added safety and convenience, consider battery-operated LED candles that provide the same ambiance without the risk of an open flame, but ensure they emit warm lighting. During winter, I often light tea-light candles most evenings. They’re even part of my travel lighting pack!

Music: The Soundtrack of Cosiness

Music is almost a religion in our house. I encourage you to create a winter playlist to soothe your soul during the colder months. It’s wonderful to reflect on years of music and the memories associated with it. The right soundtrack can elevate your relaxation and make your space feel even more welcoming.

Consider investing in a high-quality speaker system or a vintage record player to add a touch of nostalgia and charm. Having a record player in the winter is especially fun—taking turns selecting a record and discussing the memories it brings is a delightful activity.

A Recipe: Last but Not Least, Warm Up with a Hot Beverage

No cosy winter setup is complete without a warm beverage to sip on. Here’s a simple recipe for delicious hot chocolate to enjoy while relaxing in your transformed living room, perhaps snuggled under a faux fur blanket.

For those who enjoy an alcoholic drink, mulled wine is a family favourite that compliments a cosy winter home. Treat yourself to new winter mugs and wine glasses too—I’ve found it adds a special touch to your living room decor.

We hope these recommendations inspire you to create a cosy living room for the winter months ahead. Taking care of yourself and those you love will lift you out of any winter blues into the glow of a warm light, and a curated space that says “come in, curl up and feel the winter love”.

Enjoy the winter months,
